Porquerolles, Gold Island
Porquerolles, Port-Cross and Levant are part of the Hyères Archipelago. The three islands are also known as the Golden Islands and seeing how the authorities protect the place you´ll understand why they have such a name. Visitors that disrespect the environment are not welcome on the island. This Mediterranean paradise, from which you can enjoy excellent views of a big part of the Côte d´Azur, doesn´t allow cars nor smoking and lighting a fire, is forbidden. They also highly appreciate you make as little noise as possible.
Being very close to villages as sophisticated as Saint Tropez, you can still enjoy a good pastis in the town of Porquerolles – a sweet drink consumed in most parts of France at the time of “apéritif”, while watching the locals play pétanque on the Place d´Armes.
In addition to its beautiful beaches, Porquerolles is worth visiting for its interior. The vineyards, planted in the beginning of the 19th century, alongside many fruit and olive trees, account for the Mediterranean culture that you can find all over Porquerolles.
The National Park of Port-Cross
There is no doubt that the National Park of Port-Cross, located on the neighboring island Port-Cross, is one of the most beautiful trips you can make from Porquerolles. It has a nature reserve with marine mammals – accessible via sailboat or the typical island boats. And if you like orchids, you´ll find a number of different types in this protected environment, as well as various species of fish, seabirds and terrestrial and aquatic plants native to the Mediterranean.
Ruins under the sea
If you don´t want to leave the island, Porquerolles will not disappoint. Under the sea, near Fort St. Agatha, there are ruins that you can visit on diving trips and that will delight lovers of archeology. But before your trip, try to go up to the fort and observe the environment, filled with salt marshes and pure and quiet beaches.
Summer is undoubtedly the best time to travel to Porquerolles, not only because the weather is excellent and the atmosphere is incredible. Also because in July they organize a Jazz Festival, that has hundreds of followers. The beautiful beaches and natural scenery of the island give the festival an added value and it even has sections for children.
